The mat is a ubiquitous and indispensable object in the Philippines. We have them for many things and they are woven from many fibers. When one sees the spectrum of Phil mats in terms of materials used, creativity expressed and the Philippine universe exhibited, you realize that these are not products of craftsmanship so much as works of artistry.
From the north and the south of the Philippine archipelago, mats that show aspects of the natural environment of the islands as well as the creative and artistic adjustments, nay imaginative adaptability that they display in how they are conceptualized and made.
The colors, the materials, the users, the varieties in both their common or mundane level and their outstanding and accomplished heights are the subject of this book of Philippine mats. It has been over 100 years since a book of Philippine mats has been put together, it is hoped that this book will make up for the long hiatus.
